The Southern Co-operative is a successful independent regional business owned by its members. Established in Portsmouth (Hampshire) over 140 years ago, we now run more than 250 community food stores and funeral homes across twelve counties in southern England. Our growing business also includes an online home shopping service, Co-operative Independent Living, plus a natural burial ground in West Sussex and crematorium in south east Hampshire.
Why we’re different
As a co-operative, we have a purpose beyond profit. Our values and principles support sustainable business practice and we are committed to making a difference in our local communities. This includes working with an increasing number of local food and drink producers who supply our ‘Local Flavours’ range in selected stores.
We have proactive partnerships with our members, suppliers, local communities and partner organisations for the benefit of all.
The Southern Co-operative’s Local Flavours range was first trialled on the Isle of Wight in 2007. Since then it has been extended across our estate in southern England, with Local Flavours sales topping £4.1 million in 2014.
As an independent regional retailer across southern England, it’s vital that The Southern Co-operative plays a pivotal role in supporting local food producers and a sustainable rural economy; this is very much part of the business ethos as a co-operative.
Supporting Southdownsfood.org is a natural extension of The Southern Co-operative’s commitment to championing local food and drink and the people who produce this.
